1636 – Harvard College, or should we say, “Ha-vahd, was founded in Massachusetts;

1886 – The Statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from France to the United States, was dedicated in New York harbor by President Grover Cleveland.  Since that time, Lady Liberty has greeted “huddled masses yearning to breath free” with elegance and grace.

1919 – The 21st amendment to the US Constitution, better known as the National Prohibition Act, was enacted. Throughout the decade, organized crime gained a stronger and stronger foothold as a result of lucrative bootlegging and the proliferation of speakeasies.  Wonder what the Prohibition legislators would think of the legalization of marijuana in Colorado? Probably not a whole lot; federal law didn’t prohibit cannabis until 1937.

1940 – In World War II, Italy invaded Greece

1962 – The US citizenry breathed a collective sigh of relief as it was announced that then Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev ordered the dismantling of Soviet missiles in Cuba; the Cuban Missile Crisis which epitomized the Cold War, had come to an end.
